The good news is - aftermarket cats can be pretty inexpensive. Physical damage (bottoming out) can also cause the core to break up. Once the core is loose, it bangs against the shell, and can eventually crack. Eventually the welds that hold the core in place break. The outer shell and the core are different materials, which expand and contract at different rates.
